How we judged these apps
Four questions shaped every verdict. What does it cost over three years, not one month? Can your child use it on the device your family already owns? Can you try it with your child before paying? And will you ever find out whether it is working? That last question gets less attention than it deserves. A communication app you cannot evaluate asks you to renew your faith every month.
The one that will not tell you the price
TD Snap, from Tobii Dynavox, belongs on any serious shortlist. It is used widely in schools and clinics, it runs on iPad and on Windows, which no other app here does, and it carries page sets that speech-language pathologists ask for by name. It is also the only app in this table whose price you cannot look up. Its product page describes the app in detail and names no figure at all: you download it free and find out what it costs once you are inside.
That is worth knowing before you start, not after. A family choosing an AAC system is committing a child to a vocabulary layout they may use for years, and a price that only appears after installation makes it harder to compare the three-year cost against a one-time purchase like Proloquo2Go or a subscription like ours. If TD Snap is on your list, budget a phone call to Tobii Dynavox before you budget anything else.

- A smaller symbol ecosystem. The incumbents ship SymbolStix libraries of 25,000 to 40,000 symbols. Ours is smaller. Custom symbols narrow that gap; they do not close it.
- Subscription pricing. At CA$199.99 per year, several years of VoiceBloom can cost more than a one-time purchase of Proloquo2Go or LAMP.
- Alternative access requires a compatible setup. VoiceBloom’s Access mode provides larger targets, pointer highlights, and protection against accidental long-press editing for head tracking, eye gaze, and switches. - Device first. An all-Apple household can consider every app here. An Android or Chromebook household narrows quickly: VoiceBloom is the one app in this comparison that runs on both.
