Most advice about AAC hardware treats this as a fork in the road. A funded speech-generating device on one side, an app on a tablet you already own on the other, pick one and live with it. In a lot of homes it is not a fork at all.
Plenty of families run a robust dedicated device as the primary system and an app on a phone as the one that is always there. That is not indecision. It is sensible redundancy, and it is what most AAC specialists actually do in practice.

What each system is actually for
The pairing works because the two things are good at different jobs.
A dedicated device earns its place when:
- There are significant motor or vision needs. Eye gaze, switch access, and mounting are the real reasons dedicated hardware exists. A tablet cannot be made into a switch-accessible eye gaze system with a case.
- Durability is the deciding factor. These machines are built to be dropped, repeatedly, for years, and to be repaired rather than replaced.
- The device needs to be only a device. No games, no video, no notifications. For some children this matters enormously.
An app earns its place for a different reason entirely. It is the one already in your pocket:
- The board has to travel. Home, car, school, grandparents, a phone at the shops.
- You already own a device the child likes. Familiarity is worth a lot, and so is the several thousand dollars.
A mounted device is the right tool at the kitchen table and the wrong one in a supermarket queue. The reverse is just as true, which is the whole argument for having both.
When funding decides it for you
In much of the world a speech-generating device has a funding pathway that a consumer tablet does not. If somebody will pay for the device and nobody will pay for the app, take the device.
What funding does not do is arrive quickly. Assessment takes months and funding takes longer. A subscription that starts on a Tuesday means a child is communicating during that wait instead of after it. Many families who end up running both got there exactly this way: the app came first because it could start immediately, and the device arrived later without displacing it.
The part that matters more than the hardware
The thing that matters more than either choice is that a system arrives soon and the adults around the child use it. A perfect device nobody models on loses to a cheap app the whole family uses.
That is also the honest answer to the worry sitting underneath this question. Parents ask whether two systems will confuse a child, when the more common problem is one system nobody picks up. If you do run both, keep the same words in roughly the same places on each, and let whoever leads your child's AAC set the pace on any larger change.
